Workplace Insights / 5 minutes with Emily Behan People & Culture Officer

We spent 5 minutes with Emily Behan, People & Culture Officer

We found out what makes her tick and how she feels working for a people-people company.

Here’s what she had to say.

What do you do at Walker Sime – and what do your friends think you do at Walker Sime?

I’m the People & Culture officer here at Walker Sime. So, it’s all the usual HR bits & bobs, plus the extras like onboarding, diversity & inclusion, and setting up our processes so we’re able to sustain our exciting plans for growth.

My friends think I’m a transponster! (a friend’s joke)

What is a typical work day like at Walker Sime?

No two days are the same, which is good! It’s all hands on deck and it’s always fun!

Tell us why you love your job in 3 words (we are hoping here that you do love your job!).

It’s busy (but still easy-going), fun and exciting!

Tell us an interesting/surprising fact about you.

I mean I don’t think this is interesting or surprising but I love to snowboard!

If you could choose your age forever, what age would you choose and why?

I’m grateful for every age that I make it to – I think growing older is such a privilege and each new year brings something exciting! (Although, being 18 with no bills was pretty nice)

If you had 25 hours a day, how would you use your extra time?

I’d spend it with my family always.

If you had to delete all but three apps from your smartphone, which ones would you keep?

Oooh good question! Ehm, Whatsapp (obviously), Strava (keep the fitness motivation going) and Apple music!

What’s your favourite place you’ve ever visited?

Hoi An in Vietnam was beautiful! We extended our stay while we were there because we loved it so much, I highly recommend it!

Hoi An, Vietnam

What is your favourite family tradition?

We have lots of traditions with my family in Ireland and now with my little family in Manchester! The first that comes to mind is Christmas time in Dublin, my mam and I always walk down Grafton Street and get some Christmas shopping and a coffee and cake in Bewleys. We’ve done it since I was a kid and last year my son Otis got to join us which was really special.

What does being a ‘people people’ company mean at Walker Sime?

It means being genuine, authentic, down-to-earth and understanding of the fact that everyone is different, and deserves kindness from their workplace. I haven’t been at Walker Sime very long, but I instantly felt how much they genuinely cared for their people and had their best interests at heart and it’s been a real breath of fresh air!

Thanks Emily!
